Bohai oilfield is the largest offshore oil field in China and the second largest oil production base in China.

The sea area of Bohai is 73 thousand square kilometers, of which the area of the exploration area is about 43 thousand square kilometers.

Bohai oilfield belongs to the same basin structure as Liaohe oilfield, Dagang oilfield, Shengli oilfield, North China oilfield and Zhongyuan oilfield. There are five tectonic belts in Liaodong, Shijituo, Boxi, Bonan and Penglai, with total resources of about 12 billion tons.

The geological reservoir is characterized by fractured structure, developed faults and complex reservoirs. The reservoirs are mainly fluvial facies, Delta and buried hill. The oil quality is relatively thick and the heavy oil reserves account for more than 65%.

At the end of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, the Bohai Oilfield has achieved the grand goal of producing 30 million tons, and has built the first offshore oil and gas production base in China and the second largest crude oil production base in China.

After more than 40 years of exploration, it is more and more difficult to find oil and gas traps in the Bohai Sea area. Most of the oil and gas traps are "low, edge and thick". Explorers take the initiative to turn the exploration direction from the uplift and steep slope zone to the complex strike-slip fault zone with more fractured trap conditions, more complex reservoir-forming mechanism and more difficult oil and gas exploration.

In the past five years, 21 oil fields have been discovered.

Through tackling key problems and a large number of exploration practices, the theory of hydrocarbon accumulation in complex superimposed strike-slip fault zones has been conquered, and the high-precision seismic acquisition and processing technology of complex sea-land transitional zones and the test integration technology of extra-heavy oil and ultra-heavy oil in confined space of offshore platforms have been integrated and innovated. Twenty-one oilfields have been discovered and 5 billion ton oilfields have been formed. A total of 1.45 billion tons (oil equivalent) of the country's tertiary petroleum geological reserves have been reported, of which 1.02 billion tons (oil equivalent) have been proved and 16.578 million tons of peak production capacity is expected to be built.

The development, production and utilization of newly discovered oilfields will provide a strong support for the stable production of 30 million tons and increase production of Bohai oilfields, promote the rapid development of the economic circle around the Bohai Sea, and play an important role in ensuring the stable production of crude oil in eastern China, safeguarding the national energy security, stabilizing the new pattern of "land-sea co-ordination, sea-land concurrency" oil development. Four innovations to consolidate the foundation for oil and gas exploration

In recent years, in the practice of innovative exploration in Bohai oilfield, firstly, the formation mechanism and reservoir control mechanism of large-scale superimposed strike-slip faults are innovatively put forward, and six oil and gas enrichment models are systematically established, indicating the exploration direction of large and medium-sized oilfields in the complex superimposed strike-slip fault zone in Bohai Sea.

Secondly, the buried hill reservoir forming mechanism of the large-scale granite in the superimposed strike-slip fault zone is put forward.

Thirdly, a new understanding of shallow basin hydrocarbon generation controlled by three factors, namely, Lake Basin salinization, crustal thinning and strike-slip transformation, has been put forward, which enhances the exploration potential of shallow depression on the Bohai Sea margin and expands new exploration fields.

Finally, the high-precision seismic acquisition and processing technology of complex land-sea transitional zone and the test integration technology of extra-heavy oil and ultra-heavy oil in confined space of offshore platform are integrated and innovated.

The four innovative technological achievements of scientific researchers in the exploration practice of Bohai oilfield have won 1 software copyright, 4 monographs and 245 papers (including 12 in SCI and 28 in EI), and 18 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards including the Ministry of Land and Resources, China National Offshore Oil Corporation and Tianjin City.
